Low Libido in Men: Why It Happens

Low Libido in Men: Why It Happens

As men age, it is natural to experience a gradual decrease in sex drive. It can vary from man to man, but most men will continue to maintain some level of sexual interest well into their 60s and 70s. There are a number of factors that can affect libido, and treatment is available for a lot of various factors that contribute to low libido. If you are concerned about the loss of libido, speak to your doctor for advice.

A reduced sex drive, or loss of libido, is a common problem that affects both men and women at some point during their lives. It can be linked to issues such as tiredness, stress, or relationship issues, but it may also be the sign of an underlying medical condition. No two individuals’ sex drives are the same, and there is no such thing as a normal libido, however, if you are concerned or feel that your lack of desire for sex is unusual for you, it is a good idea to seek medical advice.

Reasons for Low Libido

Sexual Problem

Low libido can be caused by a physical issue that makes sex difficult or unfulfilling, such as:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Ejaculation problems such as premature ejaculation
  • Peyronie’s disease (curvature of the penis)

If a condition such as these is contributing to low libido, there are a number of medications and non-invasive treatments, such as sound wave therapy, that can help to treat the problem, thereby helping to improve libido.

Depression, Stress, and Relationship Problems

Relationship problems, stress, depression, and anxiety can have a major impact on all areas of your life, including libido. If you are feeling constantly tired, stressed, distracted, or anxious, or think you may have depression, you should speak with your doctor for advice. Your doctor may recommend counseling and/or antidepressant medication, along with lifestyle changes such as increasing lifestyle and dietary changes. If you are having relationship problems, relationship counselling can also help.

Lifestyle Choices

Factors such as excessive or long-term alcohol use, or the use of illicit drugs can affect libido. Limiting alcohol use and not using illicit drugs can help improve your overall health and increase libido.

Low Testosterone

Sometimes low testosterone levels can be the cause of low libido. Testosterone is a sex hormone that is important for a number of functions within the body. If there is a deficiency, or underproduction, of testosterone, it can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Low sex drive
  • Fatigue or reduced energy
  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Mood changes (irritability, symptoms of depression)
  • Muscle weakness and reduced muscle mass
  • Low bone density
  • Infertility
  • Weight gain

Low testosterone may be caused by a medical condition, infection, obesity, an injury to the testicles, or a hormonal condition, or can simply be due to the decline associated with normal aging.

Underlying Health Problem

Health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer can cause both physical and emotional strain, and it may affect sex drive along with other areas of life. Certain medical conditions, such as obstructive sleep apnea, unmanaged type 2 diabetes, or an infection, can cause low testosterone levels. Treating and managing the condition successfully can help to reverse testosterone levels and thereby improve libido.

Medications

Low libido can be a side effect of medications you may be taking for a medical condition. This can include medications for:

  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Prostate conditions

Your doctor may suggest a change to your medication to help improve sex drive.

Treatment for Low Libido

Low libido is a common problem, and you should not feel embarrassed about getting help. Seeking help can be the first step towards resolving the issue. In order to determine what is causing your loss of sex drive, your doctor will discuss your medical history in detail and carry out a physical exam. Lab tests may also be requested to check for any underlying health issues.

The underlying cause will determine which treatment is best for you. If low libido is the result of low testosterone levels, your doctor will need to establish the cause of the low testosterone. Your doctor will work with you to create a personalized hormone replacement treatment plan based on your health and lifestyle to get you back to a normal, healthy level. Treatment may include testosterone replacement therapy, supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes, and/or prescription medications.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

TRT may be recommended if a reversible cause for low testosterone isn’t found. Treatment works to increase your testosterone level and improve the signs and symptoms associated with low-T. TRT can be administered in different ways, including a topical gel, patches, injections, or pellets. Your doctor can discuss which method is best suited to you based on your health and lifestyle.

The Man Shot

The Man Shot is a natural, nonsurgical sexual rejuvenation and enhancement treatment that uses growth factors extracted from a sample of your blood to stimulate new tissue growth. It can offer a number of sexual benefits including increasing blood and nerve circulation, improving strength and intensity of orgasms, boosting libido and sensitivity, and increasing sexual stamina.
